Your Favorite Sports Team's Jersey is the Secret to the Athluxury Trend

Whether or not you actually like sports is beside the point.

Athleisure defined the 2010s. We traded in our jeans for Lululemon leggings, wore track pants with heels, and relished the novelty of sneakers for every occasion. Now, we’re kicking the athletic themes up a notch by repping our favorite sports teams (or at least looking like it).

Brands like Fila and Adidas have crafted a new sartorial code defined by sports. Exhibit A: the Samba. Luxury fashion brands like Miu Miu have increasingly drawn inspiration from niche sports, adding the words tenniscore, balletcore, and even equestrian-core into our TikTok fashion vocabulary.

Looking further back, ‘90s streetwear was similarly characterized by athletic references, with NFL bombers and LA Lakers tees spotted on just about every celebrity at the time. Basically, athletic themes have been somewhat of a slow burn in the fashion landscape, lending longevity to the sporty trend. Now that many are growing bored of ballet flats and designer tennis bags, we’re returning to the trend’s nineties roots, to a more on-the-nose riff on athleticism.

MAY 5: Rihanna is spotted in NYC.

On May 5, Rihanna was spotted wearing a white leather moto jacket featuring a standout orange New York Yankees logo and black spray paint details. Merging baseball attire with racing, this branded team reference is a refreshing contrast from the ultra-refined sporty looks dominating as of late.

Don’t have a favorite sports team? No problem! For Willy Chavarria’s Fall/Winter 2023 fashion show, Julia Fox paired a sheer jersey top that cheekily read “Catechism” with a pair of baggy black-and-white trousers displaying the intentionally prosaic “sports.” We’ve also seen the non-sports team sports team approach extended to nonsensical words with varsity lettering, as well as sporty-looking pieces depicting the names of luxury fashion houses — an iteration of the trend aptly dubbed athluxury.
