Rocking Horse: Burberry’s New Symbol Honors Chivalry
Reflecting Burberry's longstanding relationship with the world of horseback, the Rocking Horse bag appears in the vibrant new campaign alongside the brand's ambassadors.
Burberry's relationship with the equestrian world goes back a long way—from founder Thomas Burberry's passion for equestrianism to the iconic Equestrian Knight Design (EKD). The Rocking Horse Bag continues to celebrate the world of horseback with its saddle bag design and bridle-inspired straps. When placed on the base, the bag swings back and forth, mimicking the motion of a classic childhood toy.
Overall, the Rocking Horse bag is a semi-circular bag design highlighted on the front by an interlocking closure with a lowercase 'b' that is a new motif for the brand, while the straps attach to the main body of the bag use stitches in the shape of a capital letter B.
Getting into the new "identifying" details: The buckle is made from a circular fastener that's placed in place to secure the bag and forms the shape of a lowercase 'b'. This type of lock can only operate through a complex mechanism. Designed by Daniel Lee and his team, the mechanism works by using small, interconnected parts that work tangentially to rotate the bag's lock.
Brand identifiers such as the iconic Burberry Check—a tartan pattern introduced in the 1920s, appear on a number of designs. The Equestrian Knight (EKD) symbol is embossed on the back of the bag. Additionally, reflecting Burberry's longstanding relationship with the world of horseback, the Rocking Horse features harness-inspired shoulder straps and a curved shape, reminiscent of the classic childhood toy.
The shape of the Rocking Horse bag is crafted using precision cutting techniques and carved wooden molds to create an arc shape. The saddle shape is made entirely by hand from Burberry artisans.
The strap is adjustable and can transform from crossbody to shoulder bag, and features matte-effect metal details inspired by the hardware on horse bridles. These are delicately crafted in such a way that only light pressure is needed to open, making strap adjustment smoother.
The Equestrian Knight Design (EKD) symbol is embossed on the back of the bag and the classic Burberry Check is featured inside in some designs.
