Japanese fashion stamped with signature details, a 72-year heritage with a relentless interest in innovation — as Onitsuka Tiger fast approaches its turn of the century, newness still runs palpably in its veins.

But in order to move forward, one must look back. Nostalgia permeates the Japanese brand’s Autumn/ Winter 2021 offering, a collection of fashion and footwear pieces specifically inspired by hiking in the Himalayas, a practice that found its boom in the 70s.

As the collection launches in the country this September, we decode the details that make Onitsuka’s Tiger’s Autumn offering one to watch out for.

1. It’s a collection inspired by trekking and hiking in the 1970s.

1970s was a milestone in hiking history books. Reinterpreted to suit the metropolitan lifestyle, the brand’s lookbook evokes the boldness of hiking through the Himalayas in winter—a trend that found its boom in this decade—making it truly a feat of functionality and fashion.

2. Onitsuka Tiger Creative Director Andrea Pompilio collaborated with designer and art director Toyoki Adachi for this collection.

A visionary of Japanese textile graphic label nowartt, Toyoki Adachi created beautifully-designed textiles incorporated into the brand’s most iconic fashion and footwear silhouettes.

Selected items in this collection feature Adachi’s commitment to his own wave of modern art, as the graphics used combine two contradictory concepts — vintage & art, and analog / hand-drawn & digital, as seen on its classic tracksuits, down jackets, and bags.

3. Some key apparel pieces were created with fleece.

In step with the central concept of hiking and trekking mountains or the urban city jungle, Onitsuka Tiger employed lifestyle technology specialized in functionality. Fleece material is excellent for keeping warm while staying staunchly loyal to form. Meanwhile, the collection's nylon series lends lightweight yet structured lines to the apparel line-up, decked with neon colors and intricate embroidery stitches.

4. Classic Onitsuka footwear is reinfused with new age detailing.

Footwear has always been Onitsuka Tiger’s piece de resistance, the perfect marriage of its storied Japanese heritage and pursuit for design technology. That said, archival elements mingle with contemporary finishes in the collection’s array of footwear.
