BAGASÁO's New Collection Recalls the Past and Previews the Future
The label's latest line is titled Recall: Collection 5.5.
BAGASÁO, the independent Filipino fashion label founded by Joseph Bagasao in 2016, introduces Recall: Collection 5.5, a transition collection alluding to the blur between the past and the future of the brand. This release takes a panoramic glance at the work the atelier has done, and allows a peek into its future direction. Familiar silhouettes, cuts, fabric choices, embellishments, and emotions from previous collections recur for a reintroduction and are placed alongside design elements to be embraced by the brand in the succeeding seasons.
Recall, like all of BAGASÁO's previous womenswear drops, is a display of the studio’s patternmaking and impeccable attention to detail. Made up of a modest eight looks featuring jackets, a vest, skirts, pants, and a dress, it exhibits the founding designer's keen eye and his team’s mastery of executing high dressmaking techniques.
The line is also Bagasao’s thoughtful way of appreciating those who are close to him. “This collection is significant not only to my own [and the studio’s] journey, but also to the people who believed in us since day one,” he says. An important detail added by Bagasao to his house codes is the “V” stitching, an ode to his father and a preview of this transition collection's following act. “To better understand where we are going, I ought to recall what brought us to where we are at this moment,” he continues.
One of the collection's key references is a street photograph of a flower by Hong Kong-based photographer Bhisan Rai. The editorial feature taken at the atelier nestled in the designer’s home strengthens the sentimental narratives central to the BAGASÁO brand.
